MUMBAI: In what the experts say is 'a continental shift of brain power' , India stood third in the 39th International Physics Olympiad held in Vietnam from July 20 to July 29. Producing the best ever results in the history of Indian participation in the event, the five-member Indian team bagged four golds and one silver medal. At least 82 countries participated in the prestigious event.
After China and Chinese Taipei, India tied at the third position with Korea and USA in the medals tally. It was ahead of Russia, Australia, Germany, France and other participating European nations.
The five students, who brought glory to India, were selected and trained for the contest by the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Of them, four bagged gold medals while one brought home the silver. "The physics Olympiad was a dream for me for the last one year. Apart from the medal, the most important thing I have achieved is that now I have friends from my field in at least 10-12 countries of the world,'' said Shitikanth, a resident of Patna, who bagged a gold medal. Nishant Totla of Aurangabad, another gold medalist, said, "We were grilled by HBCSE for almost two months. The experimental training they provided for us was very crucial as 40% of the marks was based on the experiments.'' Saurabh Goyal of Kota brought home a silver medal and the other two winners were Garvit Juniwal from Jaipur and Kunal Shah, a Mumbai resident. These masterminds, who have just passed Std XII, are now heading towards the Indian Institutes of Technology for further studies as they have also secured the topmost ranks in IIT-JEE. While Shitikanth and Nishant are topper and second topper respectively, Juniwal stood 10th and Goel secured 12th rank in JEE. Shah has also joined IIT-Bombay.
